Scholarship opportunities for returning or transfer students, 2010-11 academic year


Mary Sebacher Radiography Scholarship

Award amount: $500 for academic year 2011-2012

Selection criteria:

  • Awarded to a Radiography student in the professional phase of the Radiography Program
  • Students must have a minimum cumulative MU GPA of 3.3 to qualify
  • Applicants will submit an essay of 250-500 words with their application covering the following points:
    • What excites you about your future in health care?
    • What is the importance of professionalism, leadership, and ethical behavior to radiography?
    • What impact do you hope to have through your professional work?

  • Submit a completed scholarship application with an essay

SHP Diversity Scholars

Award amount: $2000 for academic year 2010-11; spring continuation dependent upon successful completion of the fall semester.

Selection criteria:

  • Awarded to a professional student who:
    • Comes from an underrepresented background in higher education;
    • Demonstrates financial need and strong academic merit;
    • Submits a 250-500 word essay of why diversity is so important in health professions and how they plan to contribute to the realization of a more diverse environment;
  • Selection will be based on quality of essay and academic merit.
  • Application deadline is February 1, 2010. Applications may be submitted to 504 Lewis Hall.

Nancy and Bill Laurie Scholarship

Award amount: $1500 per year

Selection criteria:

  • No application is necessary, recipient is notified by the office of Financial Aid.
  • Recipient must have graduated from a high school within the state of Missouri
  • Be enrolled in college full time
  • Be an SHP student and;
  • Have financial need

Diana Baldwin Leadership and Advocacy Award

Award amount: $750 per year

Selection criteria:

Awarded to a student who has completed their first semester as a graduate student in the Department of Occupational Therapy and Occupational Science. The student shall provide evidence of demonstrating professionalism, advocacy and leadership through the following criteria:

  • A member in good standing with the Student Occupational Therapy Association of the University of Missouri-Columbia and the American Occupational Therapy Association
  • Be in good academic standing
  • Evidence of involvement in projects/activities demonstrating initiation and implementation of
    • Activism and advocacy, or
    • Activities benefiting a larger community, or
    • Activities that enhance the profile of occupational therapy through public awareness
  • A personal statement reflecting the learning from being a change agent and awareness of being socially responsible and a specific commitment to future challenges
  • A letter of recommendation from an individual or organization concerning the ability to lead demonstrated by the student and reflecting on the impact of the activity on enhancing meaningful participation in daily life and/or the ability to influence to meet societal needs for health and well being

Richard E. and Carol B. Oliver Scholarship

Award amount: $750 per year

Selection criteria:

  • Awarded to a first generation college student who is in the professional phase of their program in the School of Health Professions
  • Demonstrated merit (GPA 3.5 or higher)
  • Demonstrated leadership and service in the School of Health Professions
  • Submit a completed scholarship application with an essay
  • Application deadline February 1, 2010.

School of Health Professions Alumni Organization Awards (Professional Student)

Award amount: Minimum of $750

  • Awarded to a student in the professional phase of an SHP program
  • Students must have a minimum cumulative MU GPA of 3.30 to qualify.
  • Awarded to a student who has demonstrated involvement in and service to the School of Health Professions, its programs or services.
  • Preference will be given to applicants from under-represented backgrounds who are Missouri residents.
  • Applicants will submit a short essay along with their application covering the following points:
    • What influenced your decision to pursue a career in health professions?
    • What excites you about your future in health care?
    • What impact do you hope to have through your professional work?
  • Application deadline February 1, 2010

School of Health Professions Alumni Organization Awards (Undergraduate)

Award amount: Minimum of $750

  • Awarded to an undergraduate enrolled in SHP who has completed at least twenty four hours of MU coursework and has been enrolled at MU at least two semesters.
  • Requires a minimum cumulative MU GPA of 3.30
  • Awarded to a student who has demonstrated involvement in and service to the School of Health Professions, its programs or services.
  • Preference given to Missouri residents who are members of the Mizzou Alumni Association’s True Tigers.
  • Non-traditional students encouraged to apply.
  • Applicants will submit a short essay along with their application:
    • What influenced your decision to pursue a career in health professions?
    • What excites you about your future in health care?
    • What impact do you hope to have through your professional work?
  • Application deadline February 1, 2010

Blake Rudeen Memorial Scholarship

Award amount: $500 per year

Selection criteria:

  • Awarded to seniors in the respiratory therapy program with an interest in pediatric care
  • Additional preference shall be given to a student with documented financial need
  • Submit a completed scholarship application with an essay
  • Application deadline is Feb 1, 2010. Applications may be submitted to 507 Lewis Hall

Lois Long Scholarship

Award amount: $750 per year

Selection criteria:

  • Awarded to an MU student whose experience at the Adult Day Connection demonstrates the professional qualities of respect and service to others. (You do not need to be currently involved at the Adult Day Connection or enrolled in the School of Health Professions to apply for this award however you must have two full semesters’ experience at the Adult Day Connection and are in good academic standing to apply for this scholarship.)
  • Additional preference shall be given to a student with documented financial need
  • Submit a completed scholarship application with an essay
  • Application deadline is February 1, 2010. Applications may be submitted to 507 Lewis Hall

School of Health Professions Service Award

Award amount: $2000 for academic year 2009-10; spring continuation dependent upon successful completion of the fall semester.

Selection criteria:

  • Awarded to a professional student who:
  • Demonstrates service to the School of Health Professions;
  • Demonstrates financial need and strong academic merit;
  • Submits a resume summarizing their school, university and community service activities in addition to the completed MU financial aid application.
  • Application deadline is February 1, 2010. Applications may be submitted to 504 Lewis Hall.
