What is occupational therapy?

Young boy laughing to teacherOccupational therapy uses purposeful activities, including the tasks of daily life, to promote the greatest possible functional independence for people who are dealing with the effects of disease, injury, birth defects, disability or developmental delay.

Occupational therapy can help adults achieve maximal independence in self-care, home management and community activities through motor, cognitive and sensory re-education.

What can the SHP Adult Occupational Therapy Clinic offer its clients?

The Department of Occupational Therapy and Occupational Science Adult Clinic is a student-administered service provided under the direct supervision of a licensed occupational therapist. The clinic is designed to provide consultation, evaluation, individual treatment and/or client and caregiver education.

Services for adults may include

  • Improving motor function and control, sensory processing and functional cognition
  • Promoting independence in daily living skills
  • Designing and fabricating custom orthotics
  • Training in the use of adaptive equipment and technique

What are some conditions that might bring a client to the clinic?

  • Stroke
  • Brain injury
  • Spinal cord injury
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Parkinson's disease
  • Cerebral palsy
  • Arthritis
  • Orthopedic injury
  • Low vision

Clinic mission

  • Develop partnerships with families, other health and/or support providers and interested parties related to the care of adults and their families
  • Provide a safe and enriching therapeutic experience for adults
  • Assist students with development of clinical competency that supports research-based practice in adult occupational therapy services
  • Address and mind, body and spirit of all adults and their families.

The Department of Occupational Therapy and Occupational Science Adult Clinic is located in Lewis Hall on the University of Missouri campus.
