Accreditation and Credentialing

The Department of Occupational Therapy and Occupational Science (OTOS) is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE) of the American Occupational Therapy Association, 4720 Montgomery Lane, Bethesda, MD, 20814-3425, telephone (301) 652-2682 TDD 800-377-8555; FAX (301) 652-7711.

Graduates are eligible to sit for the national certification examination administered by the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy Inc., 12 South Summit Ave., Suite 100, Gaithersburg, MD 20877-4150, telephone (301)990-7979; Fax (301) 869-8492.  Successful completion of this examination qualifies the graduate as an occupational therapist, registered (OTR). Most states require licensure to practice, which is based on the results of the NBCOT certification exam.

Graduates of the Occupational Therapy and Occupational Science program have demonstrated very good outcomes on the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy certification examination (NBCOT). Average test scores on the certification exam have consistently been above the national average for the last 28 years.

For the past 3 calendar years (2007, 2008 and 2009):

  • A total of 62 students have graduated from the program.
  • A total of 62 students have taken the NBCOT certification exam for the first time.
  • A total of 59 out of 62 first-time test takers passed the NBCOT certification exam on the first try.
  • Therefore a total of 95 percent of the first-time test takers passed the NBCOT certification exam.
  • A total of 100 percent including first time and repeat test takers in the last 3 calendar years have passed the National Certification exam.
