In the spring 2008 issue of The Touchstone you met Titus Blackmon, president of the Mizzou Alumni Association. Spend a few more minutes with him through our interview here:
What do you think SHP offers to the University that is unique, a pride point, etc.? The SHP is unique in that it is a compilation of several degree programs that included such things as Physical Therapy and Speech Pathology. The SHP does a lot of things well and I was impressed with the efficiency and professionalism of the off-site facilities. I was also impressed with the Adult Day Connection eldercare facility. Those are just two things that the SHP should be proud of. There was one other thing that struck me as unique and that is the school’s success with reaching out to civic organizations as a resource for financial assistance in running community-wide programs.
What do you think of the Dean’s Team, the new student leadership program working directly with the dean? The Dean’s Team is great concept and I am fortunate to have had the opportunity to meet with these young leaders. They are involved with the future of SHP, their future and the future of their industry. The conversation was incredible! My discussion with them was how they can be active alumni and why they should be.
What do you tell students about the alumni association…in other words, why is it important to them and why should they join it? The Alumni Association represents each and every one of us. We are parts of the whole. In its greatest role, the Alumni Association provides connectivity, programming events, nostalgia, camaraderie, updates on research and news about the university, as well as seeing other alums and recalling fond memories. I am encouraging everyone to become members of the Alumni Association as it helps us to continue to provide the fantastic programs and events we are currently producing. You can sign up either on the web (www.mizzou.com) or by contacting the Alumni Association office (800-372-6822).
