Adult Day Connection (formerly Eldercare
Center)
Since 1989, the Adult Day Connection has provided
a safe and caring environment for frail, impaired or isolated older
adults. It is the only state licensed, adult day health-care program
serving families in mid-Missouri. In 2006, The Adult Day Connection opened a second facility location in Columbia's first ward, and anticipate opening a third location in the southeastern Columbia area in the Spring of 2007. Approximately 300 participants
and their families have benefited from the therapeutic activities,
exercise, nursing care and supervision provided by the centers
staff. The center also bridges service to the community with a learning
mission. Students and faculty members have spent thousands of hours
with clients at the center.

The
Health Connection
The Health Connection was established in 1989
as a model for a community-based exercise program for older people
and people with arthritis and other conditions that limit physical
activity. Today, it operates as a community health, wellness and
research center.
Staffed with certified exercise professionals, registered
nurses, educators and counselors trained to help individuals of
all ages and fitness levels, the center offers a variety of programming,
including many types of exercise classes, a supervised gymnasium
for aerobic and strengthening exercise, massage therapy, cholesterol
and glucose screenings, blood-pressure and heart-rate monitoring,
educational seminars and immunizations.
The center is affiliated with the Central Missouri
Arthritis Center, a Missouri Department of Health center that
provides arthritis education and information.
Schools of Health Professions faculty members rely
on The Health Connection to conduct important research on arthritis
and the benefits of exercise. The center also functions as a learning
laboratory for health-professions students. The National Council
on Aging has identified The Health Connection as one of the nations
top health and wellness centers for physical activity programming
for older adults. The council selected 10 programs out of 900.
Of the programs recognized, The Health Connection was the only
one affiliated with an academic health center.

Robert
G. Combs Language Preschool
With support from the Scottish Rite, the Department
of Communication Science and Disorders operates the Robert G. Combs
Language Preschool, a morning school for 3 to 5-yearl-old children
who may or may not have speech and language difficulties. Children
with speech and language difficulties benefit from exposure to peer
models with typical language development. As the only preschool
in mid-Missouri that focuses primarily on speech and language development,
the school serves many children who do not qualify for service through
the public school system. Most children who attend the preschool
also receive individual services in the MU Speech and Hearing Clinic.
Seniors and first-year graduate students in the Department of Communication
Science and Disorders have an opportunity to work in the preschool
and are supervised by licensed and certified speech-language pathologists.

others. The clinic offers hearing screenings for anyone older than
7 months. In addition to providing services at reduced rates, the
