1000 Introduction to Communication Science and Disorders (1). Nature of communication and its development; types of speech, language and hearing disorders; professional preparation, settings, and work of speech-language pathologists and audiologists.

1060 Human Language (3). General introduction to various aspects of linguistic study. Elementary analysis of language data with some attention to application of linguistic study to other  disciplines. (Same as Anthropology 1060, Linguistics 1060 and English 1060).

1110 Manual Communication I (3).  Introduction to the English-based sign system, Signed English, a system that has been developed to bridge the gap between English and American Sign Language.  Graded on S/U basis only.

1120 Manual Communication II (3).  Continued vocabulary development and introduction of American Sign Language syntax and morphology.  Prerequisite: CSD 1110 or instructor's consent.

2120 Survey of Communication Disorders (3).  Systematic survey of the disorders of speech, language, and hearing.

3010 American Phonetics (3).  Analysis of production and acoustics of the sounds of speech with an emphasis on American English; practice in broad and narrow transcription using the International Phonetic Alphabet. (Same as Linguistics 3010).

3020 Normal Language Development (3).  Language development in children and changes in language processing during normal aging. Cognition and language; language learning processes; language sample analysis; relationship between spoken and written language. Prerequisite: Psychology 2410 or Linguistics/English 4600. (Same as Psychology 3610).

3210 Anatomy and Physiology of the Speech Mechanism (3).  Introduction to anatomical and functional aspects of the speech mechanism.  Prerequisite: Departmental consent. (Same as Linguistics 3210).

3230 Hearing Science (3).  Introduction to the nature of sound and its measurement; anatomy and physiology of the auditory and vestibular systems; psychoacoustic methods and phenomena. Prerequisite: CSD majors or instructor's consent.

4001 Topics in Communication Science and Disorders (cr. arr.).  Organized study of selected topics.  Subjects and earnable credit vary from semester to semester.  May be repeated with departmental consent.  Prerequisites: Junior standing and instructor's consent.

4020 Language Disorders in Children (3). Overview of language disorders from early childhood through adolescence. Includes language disorders as primary disability and as secondary to other disabilities. Introduction to assessment and intervention. Prerequisites: CSD 2120, CSD 3020 and Linguistics 4600. CSD majors only.

4030 Language Disorders of Adults (2).  Introduction to acquired adult language disorders. Review of neuroanatomy/physiology, etiology and symptomatology, with introduction to assessment and treatment procedures. Prerequisites: CSD 2120, CSD 3020, CSD 4430 and Linguistics 4600 or instructor's consent.

4200 Professional Voice (2). Voice production, common voice problems and their causes; healthy vocal habits and techniques to achieve optimal voice.

4210 Fluency Disorders (2). Introduction to the nature, assessment, and treatment of  fluency disorders. Emphasis on developmental stuttering.  Prerequisite: CSD 2120 and CSD 3210.

4220 Voice Disorders (1). Introduction to voice disorders in children and adults. Includes overview of perceptual and instrumental assessment procedures and selected treatment approaches. Prerequisites:  CSD 2120, CSD 3010, CSD 3210 and CSD 4430.

4320 Disorders of Phonology and Articulation (3). Overview of disorders of use and production of speech sounds with an emphasis on developmental disorders. Introduction to assessment and treatment. Prerequisites: CSD 2120, CSD 3010, CSD 3020 and CSD 3210. CSD majors only.

4330 Introduction to Audiology (3). Principles and techniques of audiological testing; etiologies of hearing impairment; current technologies in re/habilitation. C S&D majors only.  Prerequisites: CSD 3230 or instructor's consent.

4340 Aural Rehabilitation (3). Identification, evaluation, and management of problems associated with hearing impairment in both children and adults.  Includes issues related to speech/language development, communication, education and social factors.  Prerequisites: CSD 3230 and CSD 4330.

4420 Reading and Language Disabilities in School-Age Children (3). Theories, research, and practice in reading development and disorders.  Focus on reading disabilities related to language disorders of various etiologies including developmental language disorders and head injury.  Special attention to assessment, remediation, teaching methods.

4430 Neurophysiology for Speech, Language, and Hearing (3). Principles of basic neurophysiology, emphasizing correlation  of structure and function of the nervous system.

4500 Issues in Professional Practice (3). Organizational, interprofessional, economic, legal, and ethical aspects of delivering speech, language, and hearing services.

4810 Psycholinguistics (3). Examination of the knowledge and processes that underlie the human ability to produce and understand language. Prerequisite: instructor's consent. (Same as Linguistics 4810).

4820 Speech Perception (3). Selected topics in the perceptual processing of speech sounds and spoken language. (Same as Linguistics 4820).

4830 Individual Differences in Language Processing (2). Examination of the normal variations exhibited across individuals in the acquisition, use, and representation of language. Also considered are individual differences seen in second language learning, the aging process, and language disorders. Prerequisite: instructor's consent.

4900 Clinical Observation in Communication Disorders (1). Directed clinical observations designed to prepare the student for clinical practicum. Repeated for a total of 2 credit hours Graded on a S/U basis only. Prerequisite: Senior standing and departmental consent. CSD majors only.

4945 Clinical Apprenticeship in Communication Disorders (3). Supervised observation and clinical experience in speech-language pathology for undergraduates. CSD majors only. Prerequisite: Senior standing and departmental consent.

4950 Research Apprenticeship (cr. arr.). Research apprenticeship with a faculty member, assisting in the development and execution of research in communication  processes and disorders. May be repeated to 6 hrs. maximum. Prerequisite: instructor's consent.

4960 Directed Reading in Communication Science and Disorders (1-3). Independent reading; reports. Prerequisite: instructor's consent.

8030 Acquired Language Disorders (4). Etiology, symptomatology, assessment, and rehabilitation of acquired neurogenic communication disorders. Emphasis on aphasia, traumatic brain injury, dementia, and right-hemisphere syndrome. Recent advances in relevant clinical research; some direct patient experience.  Prerequisite: instructor's consent.

8050 Research in Communication Science and Disorders (cr. arr.). Independent research leading to a report but not to a thesis or dissertation. Prerequisite: instructor's consent.

8085 Problems in Communication Science and Disorders (cr. arr.) Individual study not leading to thesis or dissertation. Prerequisite: instructor's consent.

8087 Seminar: Contemporary Topics in Speech-Language Pathology (3). Advanced study involving critical literature review and research on selected topics in speech and language. May be repeated for up to six credits. Prerequisite: instructor's consent.

8100 Speech Science (4). Introduction to the physiological and acoustic aspects of speech production; instrumentation for speech analysis including computer-based speech processing techniques. Prerequisite: instructor's consent.

8200 Motor Speech Disorders (3). Review of neuroanatomic mechanisms underlying speech production; etiology, symptomatology, epidemiology, and prognosis of motor speech disorders resulting from acquired neurological damage. Emphasis on clinical assessment and rehabilitation procedures. Prerequisite: instructor's consent.

8210 Disorders of Fluency (3). Identification and remediation of fluency disorders in children and adults. Prerequisites: CSD 3210, CSD 4210 and CSD 4430 or instructor's consent.

8220 Disorders of Voice (2). Diagnosis and management of communication disorders resulting from pathologies or abnormalities of the craniofacial structures and from patholgies or misuse of the phonatory systems.  Prerequisites: CSD 3210, CSD 4220 and CSD 4320 or instructor's consent.

8230 Dysphagia (2). Diagnosis and treatment of swallowing disorders, including video-fluoroscopic analysis.  Focus is on acquired dysphagia in adults, but developmental dysphagia is also addressed.  Prerequisites: CSD 3210, CSD 4210, and CSD 8200 or instructor's consent.

8240 Orofacial Anomalies (1). Nature, causes, diagnosis, and treatment of disorders of communication associated with congenital orofacial anomalies. Emphasis on cleft palate. Prerequisites: CSD 3210 and CSD 4320 or instructor's consent.

8260 Diagnosis in Speech-Language Pathology (3). General principles of diagnosis; specific diagnostic tools and procedures for various speech and language disorders. Prerequisite: departmental consent.

8430 Introduction to Augmentative and Alternative Communication (2). Principles of AAC assessment, methods of intervention, and types of technology available for individuals unable to communicate fully through speech. Prerequisites: CSD 8020, CSD 8030 and CSD 8200 or instructor's consent.

8935 Clinical Practice in Audiology (1). Supervised practice in hearing screening, hearing conservation, and aural re/habilitation. May be repeated for credit. Prerequisite: CSD 4330 and departmental consent. Graded on S/U basis only.

8945 Clinical Practice in Speech-Language Pathology (2-10). Supervised clinical practice in speech-language pathology for graduate students.  May be repeated for credit.  Prerequisites: departmental consent.
