Communication Science & Disorders

Welcome to CSD at MU

The Department of Communication Science and Disorders at the University of Missouri-Columbia is proud of its long and distinguished history and the high quality of its faculty, staff and students. In addition to having one of the oldest continually accredited programs in Speech-Language Pathology in the nation, we offer the only Ph.D. program in Speech-Language Pathology in the state of Missouri.

Our Mission

We are committed to excellence in educational, research, and clinical activities. Our educational and research programs include the areas of normal language, speech, and hearing (including physiological, acoustic, perceptual, linguistic, cognitive and social processes), and the diagnosis and treatment of the spectrum of communication disorders. Our professional training programs are designed to develop thoughtful scholars who can engage in creative and flexible clinical problem-solving on the basis of their ability to find and understand relevant information, to critically evaluate information, to integrate information across content areas, and to communicate effectively in a variety of contexts. In addition, the goal of our doctoral program is the development of research scientists who will contribute to the understanding of normal and disordered processes of communication and will further clinical science through their research and teaching.

Career Opportunities in CSD

The field of communication disorders includes the related but distinct professions of speech-language pathology and audiology. Both require graduate degrees for professional practice and certification. Speech-language pathology and audiology offer highly rewarding careers with opportunities to work with a wide variety of clients in an array of work settings. Job demand is very high for both professions at this time. The US Government's Bureau of Labor Statistics projects job growth to be much faster than the average of all occupations through at least 2012. more>
