Shawna Strickland, PhD, RRT-NPS, AE-C
Dr. Strickland is currently active in research concerning adult asthma education, distance education and the factors affecting the success of the learner. Her most recent publications include the articles "The Effectiveness of Blended Learning Environments for the Delivery of Respiratory Care Education" found in the Journal of Allied Health, 2008 and "Understanding Successful Characteristics of Adult Learners" found in Respiratory Care Education Annual, 2007. She has also presented her research with D. Evans and J. Domachowski at the American Association of Respiratory Care's Summer Forum (2008) and her research with T. Hogan and R. Hogan at the American Thoracic Society's Annual Conference (2007).
The senior respiratory therapy students and their instructor will go into an elementary school and discuss asthma education. The program is called Open Airways for Schools (OAS) and is designed to reach school children aged 8-11 who have been diagnosed with asthma. OAS consists of three, 2 hour group lessons. OAS uses group discussion, stories, games and role play to help students take part in the program. The program’s goals include improving asthma self-management skills, decreasing asthma related emergencies, raising asthma awareness among parents and promoting broader asthma management coordination among physicians, parents and schools.
