Clinical Laboratory Science (Medical Technology)

Clinical Laboratory Scientists provide physicians with 70 to 80% of the information they require for the detection, accurate diagnosis, and treatment of disease. As a Clinical Laboratory Scientist/Medical Technologist, you will be trained in the theoretical and practical aspects of clinical laboratory medicine–chemistry, hematology, microbiology, immunology, molecular pathology, and blood banking.

Annual Salaries for a Clinical Laboratory Scientist can range from $40,000 to $70,000.    CLS offers a wide variety of career options, including work in hospitals, forensic science, private clinics, independent laboratories, public health facilities, business, industry, research, sales, and marketing. Students also may use this major to prepare for Medical, Dental, or Pharmacy Schools, or admission to many graduate programs in medical sciences.

There is a critical national shortage of trained Clinical Laboratory Scientists. As of March 2009, 63% of labs were having difficulty in hiring staff level CLS positions.

There will be a continuing need for more Clinical Laboratory Scientists in the future. The average age of clinical lab personnel is now 48 years; 25% of CLS workforce will retire in next 10 years. 2 Clinical Lab Scientists enter the workforce for every 7 that retire.

The University of Missouri offers a Bachelor of Health Science (BHS) degree in Clinical Laboratory Science (CLS) with an emphasis in Medical Technology. The CLS Program is a well established program that combines a NAACLS certified curricula, provided by the University of Nebraska Medical Center, with nine months of clinical training that prepares individuals to take national certification examinations as Clinical Laboratory Scientists.

An Updated Application for Admission to the Clinical Laboratory Science Program will be available October 1, 2009!  The Deadline for Application will be November 1st.  Please see the "Admissions Requirements" link on the left side for information on submitting your application.  Scholarships are available.
